Yixing Red Clay Lotus Gaiwan Teapot

Yixing Red Clay Lotus Gaiwan Teapot

The Yixing Red Clay Lotus Gaiwan Teapot is crafted from original ore red mud, known for its fine and pure quality. Fired at approximately 1180°C, the teapot forms a double-pore structure that helps retain both the water temperature and the fragrance of tea. The top of the lid is large for easy water injection, while the bottom is smaller to allow concentrated precipitation of tea leaves. The design of the lotus petals makes it easy to hold, and the lid remains in place when pouring. The reserved water outlet isolates the tea leaves, enhancing the brewing experience. This handcrafted piece showcases exquisite craftsmanship, exuding both generosity and elegance. The more it is used, the more lustrous the body of the teapot becomes, and the tea soup becomes richer and more fragrant.

The Gaiwan (Mandarin for covered cup, "zhong" or “cha chung" in Cantonese) has been used in China since about 1350. It consists of a saucer, bowl, and lid, designed to be used together. To brew tea with the Yixing Red Clay Lotus Gaiwan Teapot, first place the tea in the bottom of the Gaiwan. Pour in enough boiling water to come just under halfway up the cup, then immediately drain off the water by holding the cup and saucer together and using the lid as a strainer to hold back the leaves. After rinsing, uncover the leaves and inhale the aroma. Next, pour fresh boiling water into the Gaiwan, not directly onto the leaves but down the inside of the cup to set the leaves swirling at the bottom. You can then drink the tea directly from the teapot or pour it into a fair cup to cool it.

The Yixing Red Clay Lotus Gaiwan Teapot is perfect for any type of tea, as long as you carefully monitor the water temperature and brewing time. The tea can be brewed and drunk from the same vessel, or the Gaiwan can be used primarily as a teapot, with the tea decanted into a small pitcher or individual tasting cups.
